Liverpool made hard work of their Carabao Cup triumph over Leicester, but fans will be delighted with what they saw, especially from Ben Doak.
The Reds were forced to come from behind to win 3-1 against their Championship opponents on Wednesday night as Kasey McAteer put the visitors in front in the third minute.
It was all Liverpool after that, but the record winners of the competition just couldn’t put the ball in the net in the first half with their standout opportunity seeing Cody Gakpo’s goalbound effort get cleared off the line by Conor Coady.
They found their shooting boots in the second half with Gakpo levelling the scores, before a stunning long-range effort by Dominik Szoboszlai and Diogo Jota’s delicious back-heel secured Liverpool’s place in the last-16.
Szoboszlai and Jota showed their class in the second half but it was a stirring display from forward Doak which really caught the eye of fans.
There are high hopes for 17-year-old starlet Doak, who joined Liverpool from Celtic in the summer of 2022.
The Scottish forward put himself about in his 65 minutes on the pitch, also having a penalty appeal waved away in the first half.
He was given a standing ovation when being substituted, with talkSPORT’s Micky Gray saying on commentary: “Top class tonight… what a career he’s going to have.”
And it seems like these Liverpool fans feel the same.
“Not exaggerating but Ben Doak is the Scottish Messi,” one Liverpool fan said.
“Ben Doak is going straight to the top,” another added.
“Ben Doak is seriously the 2008 Ronaldo Regen,” this fan claimed.
“The way Ben Doak is slaying in this game, that performance improvement from the Europa game against LASK is insane,” another said.
“Ben Doak is going to be something special, I just know it,” this fan said.
