Sean Dyche has been suggested as a shock replacement for under-fire Man Utd manager Ruben Amorim.
The current Man Utd boss is at risk of losing his job at Old Trafford after a disastrous start to the season was compounded by a 3-0 defeat to Manchester City at the Etihad on Sunday.
While it is not believed that Amorim’s position is under immediate threat, any failure to improve results in the next games will surely leave the Portuguese manager in an impossible position.
Former QPR striker Charlie Austin has called on United to hire Dyche, while he also threw Zinedine Zidane’s name in the ring.
Dyche for Man Utd?
“I think he’s got to go,” Austin told The Express.
“If it’s my decision, I’m going after Zinedine Zidane. Ultimately, there are a different set of managers that you’ve got to be looking at, because the situation Manchester United are in, I would take Zidane but is he the right man for the job and how we see them, probably not.
“In my honest opinion, you have to look at the job Sean Dyche did at Burnley, what he did at Everton. For me, he stabilised the club, at least he’s going to put structure in there.”
Dyche is out of work since being sacked by Everton this year. He previously spent 10 years at Burnley and before that he was at Watford.
Hiring Dyche would be some culture clash from Amorim, who was regarded as one of Europe’s most exciting new coaches when United appointed him in November 2024.
Amorim had shone as coach of Sporting Lisbon, leading them to five trophies – including two Portuguese Primeira Liga titles.
He also helped develop a host of talented players, including new Arsenal signing Viktor Gyokeres.
But Amorim has failed badly to replicate his success at Sporting at Man Utd.
United finished the 2024-25 season in 15th position, failed to win a trophy and endured arguably the worst campaign in the club’s history for over 50 years.
The 40-year-old has one of the worst win percentages in Man Utd’s history also at just 36 per cent, and this number drops even lower when just considering Premier League football.
United’s poor start to the new season which sees them well off the pace in the Premier League and knocked out of the EFL Cup by fourth division Grimsby has only added to the pressure.
