Serie A | AC Milan 2-0 Monza: Bowing out with victory amid jeers

Milan saw out the season with a victory over already relegated Monza thanks to Matteo Gabbia and Joao Felix goals, but it was a surreal atmosphere amid fan protests.

This final game of the season was overshadowed by the fan protest which saw 5,000 supporters gather outside the club headquarters to demand the departure of the entire management staff. The ultras then organised themselves in a human message reading ‘Go Home’ in the stands, walking out after 20 minutes to continue their insulting chants outside.

As for the match, Santiago Gimenez and coach Sergio Conceicao sat out bans, with Davide Bartesaghi given his first Serie A start. Already relegated Monza missed Dany Mota Carvalho, Omari Forson, Silvere Ganvoula, Roberto Gagliardini and Danilo D’Ambrosio.

Strahinja Pavlovic was celebrating his birthday and almost opened the scoring with a free kick that Samuel Pizzignacco clawed off the line in the opening minutes.

Samuele Birindelli was offside by the time he fired his shot against the upright, while Pedro Pereira’s acrobatic defending prevented Joao Felix meeting the Fikayo Tomori volley from six yards.

Keita Balde Diao had the ball in the net for Monza just before half-time with a smart volley, but it was disallowed as Kyriakopoulos was offside in the build-up.

Francesco Camarda had been expected to start, but came on for the second half to rare applause from the remaining crowd. Christian Pulisic hit the side-netting after combining with Joao Felix and Tijjani Reijnders, with substitute Samuel Chukwueze doing the same.

Camarda also tested Pizzignacco after a cheeky flick over Alberto Carboni to shoot on the volley, while he assisted the Joao Felix strike straight at the goalkeeper.

Milan were clearly fired up in the second half, as Joao Felix nodded a Tomori cross onto the bar, then Camarda’s angled drive was deflected inches wide. On the resulting Chukwueze corner, Gabbia rose to nod in at the near post and finally break the deadlock.

Joao Felix earned and then converted a free kick to double their lead, curling the right-footed effort over the wall and in at the near post, despite Pizzignacco getting a glove to it.

Mike Maignan had to pull out an extraordinary save at the 88^th minute to deny the Jean-Daniel Akpa Akpro free header on a corner.
