Inter thrashed sorry Torino 5-0 including a Marcus Thuram brace, Lautaro Martinez, and a goal from debutant Ange-Yoan Bonny, but the Granata have big problems.
The Nerazzurri had Hakan Calhanoglu and Francesco Pio Esposito suspended, with Carlos Augusto and Davide Frattesi not fully fit, while Kristjan Asllani completed his transfer to Torino today. Petar Sucic was the only summer signing to start, moving Nicolò Barella into more of a playmaker role. Toro squeezed past Modena 1-0 in the Coppa Italia last week, but were still missing Ardian Ismajli, Perr Schuurs and Zanos Savva. New buys Franco Israel, Giovanni Simeone and Cyril Ngonge went straight into the starting XI.
See how it all unfolded on the Liveblog.
Marcus Thuram’s header into the ground bounced over within 44 seconds and Inter took the lead from a set play routine, when Alessandro Bastoni peeled away from his marker for a glancing header at the near post on Barella’s corner kick.
The second goal was from open play, as Henrikh Mkhitaryan battled in a crowd on the edge of the area, then Sucic immediately threaded through to send Thuram down the right, scoring with a precise angled drive. He waved up to the stands, where his father Lilian and brother Khephren were seated.
Sucic impressed on his Serie A debut, testing Franco Israel from the edge of the area, but the Torino goalkeeper had to make two big saves on the stroke of half-time. First he flew to palm a Francesco Acerbi header out from under the crossbar on a corner, then parried another Sucic scorcher.
After the restart, Thuram’s curler was inches wide and Simeone failed to make the most of a Cesare Casadei cross when turning off target.
Instead, Lautaro Martinez pounced when Gvidas Gineitis made a weak pass to his own goalkeeper playing out from the back, turning into the empty net.
Israel continued to make saves on Benjamin Pavard at the back post from another corner, though Pavard was lucky to get away with an error when debutant Zakaria Aboukhlal fired straight at Yann Sommer.
Moments later, Inter added a fourth with Thuram’s towering header on the Bastoni cross from the left, nodding it back across the goalkeeper.
Henrikh Mkhitaryan hit the side-netting from a Bonny through ball, but Torino gifted a fifth goal with some suicidal defending. Once again, their attempts to play out from the back were intercepted, allowing Bonny to sweep home from 12 yards a few minutes into his debut.
Inter 5-0 Torino
Bastoni 18 (I), Thuram 36, 62 (I), Lautaro Martinez 52 (I), Bonny 72 (I)
