Serie A pundits identify two Juventus shortcomings

Former Serie A stars Paolo Di Canio, Beppe Bergomi and Luca Marchegiani analyse Juventus’ recent games, including a 1-1 draw against Hellas Verona, identifying two shortcomings in the Bianconeri squad.

Juventus were held to a 1-1 draw by Hellas Verona on Saturday, and even if they remain unbeaten across all competitions this season, they could see Napoli take a two-point lead at the top of the Serie A table tonight.

Sky Sport Italia pundits Marchegiani, Bergomi and Di Canio analysed the recent Bianconeri performances, including a 4-3 win against Inter and a 4-4 draw against Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League, highlighting where the Bianconeri must improve.

Marchegiani, Di Canio and Bergomi open up about Juventus’ issues

“They paid for the mental tiredness of two extremely demanding games [vs. Inter and Dortmund],” Marchegiani said.

“They ended in the best way, but this is not a team that is still ready for this sort of consistency. It’s a team I really like; they are evolving, but perhaps under this aspect, they still lack something.”

Di Canio, a former Juventus striker, argued: “Many of these players are not accustomed to this. I was sceptical about Igor Tudor last season, but I have to say he’s doing an excellent job.

“He has re-established the seriousness that a team must have, with everyone going in the same direction. He has great merit for the team’s mental solidity, not so much in tactical terms. Bremer is very strong, but even in these games, he made some mistakes, because the level is becoming higher.”

Bergomi: Juventus showed ‘different attitude’ vs. Inter and Borussia Dortmund

Lastly, ex-Inter defender Bergomi noted: “It is in these games, against Borussia and Inter, where they showed a different attitude. They used to press higher. Either they respected their opponents too much or, as you said, they lacked something mentally.

“They sat too deeply. Out of the seven goals they conceded, five were from the edge of the box. It could be a mental and physical issue. Juventus were solid, but didn’t get the results through their performances and high press.”

Juventus’ next game is against Atalanta this coming Saturday at the Allianz Stadium in Turin.

The Bianconeri have ten points in four Serie A matches. They are currently the table leaders, but second-placed Napoli have a game in hand, to be played tonight against Pisa.
