Serie A | Venezia 2-3 Juventus: Bianconeri seal top four finish in thrilling comeback

Juventus secured a Champions League placement by winning 3-2 away at Venezia on Sunday, while the Lagunari were relegated to Serie B.

There was so much at stake here, because the Bianconeri needed a victory to be sure of fourth place, while the Lagunari had to win and hope for other results to escape relegation. Pierre Kalulu was suspended, with Gleison Bremer, Juan Cabal and Arkadiusz Milik were still out injured, but Khephren Thuram and Nicolò Savona returned from bans. Renato Veiga, Weston McKennie, Federico Gatti and Teun Koopmeiners were only fit for the bench. Venezia had Jay Idzes suspended, with Michael Svoboda and Cheick Condé out of action.

The home side took an early lead with Daniel Fila, who finalised an attacking manoeuvre in which almost all Venezia players touched the ball, leading to a Mikael Egill Ellertsson from the left and Fila’s unorthodox finish with his knee.

The Juventus reaction was immediate and culminated with Alberto Costa’s first Serie A goal, but the defender’s strike from the edge of the box was quickly cancelled out by VAR, which spotted Costa’s handball in the build-up.

A few minutes later, a Francisco Conceiçao shot finished out wide at the near post, while Randal Kolo Muani earned a corner kick after sprinting past two Venezia defenders, but his attempt from inside the box was blocked.

Juventus scored the equaliser at minute 25 with Kenan Yildiz, who made the most of a throw-in taken quickly, dribbled past a Venezia defender inside the box and beat Ionut Radu with a left-foot finish.

Five minutes later, the Old Lady took the lead again with Kolo Muani. Joël Schingtienne’s log pass was misplaced, so Juve won the ball high up the pitch, allowing the French striker to control the ball with the outside of his foot and find the net with a powerful shot.

Ex-Juventus midfielder Hans Nicolussi Caviglia was inches away from scoring the equaliser for the Lagunari when he hit the woodwork from a tight angle after a corner kick combination.

Ridgeciano Haps levelled the score at the beginning of the second half. Venezia once again hurt the Old Lady from the flank. John Yeboah outpaced Andrea Cambiaso down the right, passed it towards the middle, and found Haps at the far post. Michele Di Gregorio seemed on the ball’s trajectory, but Nicolò Savonan deflected Haps’ shot on the goalline.

The Juventus keeper frustrated Yeboah a few minutes later, with a crucial save at the near post.

Nicolussi Caviglia fouled Conceiçao inside the box and the referee awarded Juventus a spot kick, which Manuel Locatelli converted at the top corner.

A few minutes later, the Italian midfielder could have won the game, but his shot from the edge of the box was wide.

Juventus’ win means the Bianconeri finished fourth in Serie A, while Venezia were relegated.
