Seven fans who made Nazi salutes during a Nations League match between France and Croatia have been taken into custody, Parisian authorities have confirmed.

Laurent Nunez, Prefect of the Paris Police, issued a statement on Monday detailing that the seven individuals were arrested after security measures were put in place ahead of Sunday’s game at the Stade de France.

After being contacted by The Associated Press, Nunez did not say which team the fans supported.

‘Sport is and must remain a celebration,’ he said in a statement on social media. ‘These individuals have no business in a sports arena.’

During the match, firecrackers went off in the enclosure where the Croatia fans were gathered and some flares were also lit.

Last year, Croatia were among seven national soccer federations ordered by UEFA to pay fines for racist and discriminatory abuse by fans at European Championship games.

They were handed the biggest fine of 50,000 euros ($54,000) for incidents at each of its three matches.

France, who went into Sunday’s game with a two-goal deficit from the first leg, clawed level on aggregate thanks to goals from Michael Olise and Ousmane Dembele, taking the tie to 2-2 at the end of normal time.

The 2018 World Cup winners held their nerve from the penalty spot to win the shootout 5-4, with Bayern Munich defender Josip Stanisic missing the decisive penalty for Croatia.

France will now play Spain in the last four of the Nations League, which marks a repeat of the Euro 2024 semi-final last year won by La Roja.
