At just five years of age, Almeida joined the youth academy of Rio de Janeiro-based giants Flamengo where he made a name for himself with his ability on the ball and seemingly god-given talent.

However, the youngster has now completed a transfer that has caused a ripple all over the world.

Almeida joins Corinthians

Almeida has announced on his Instagram account that he has officially signed for Corinthians in a transfer that has sparked a heated debate in Latin America, with the news making headlines as far afield as Mexico and elsewhere.

The fact that children as young as six can already be subject to transfer interest from rival clubs is certainly a controversial topic and many on social media voiced concern about Almeida being exposed to the hustle and bustle of elite football at such a young age.

However, the decision of his family to sign him up with Corinthians appears to have had a very simple rationale: wanting to be closer to home. A post on Enrico’s Instagram read: “As many know, I arrived in Rio de Janeiro at just 5 years old and was one of the youngest to join the club from another state.

“This journey took me away from my family and friends, and this absence weighs heavily on my heart. My parents made sacrifices, travelling long distances to work in another state, while I stayed here in Rio de Janeiro. This situation brought challenges and made things increasingly difficult for us.”
