Some Thoughts on Chelsea FC

The Season is 5 games in with the new Chelsea FC ownership a little over a year old. About 18 months ago Roman was sanctioned, and the club put into turmoil. Contracts could not be discussed, players were leaving for free, fans left wondering who would come in? Would any new owner invest in new players? Would we become a selling club? How would the story unfold?

Opposition fans were teasing that the Roman empire was finished, that we would go into administration, we might get relegated, we would have points deducted. A lot of gloating from a lot of fans of other clubs and one or two journalists and pundits as well.

The demise of our great club, doom and gloom. Not to mention an ageing squad that had needed a major overhaul for a good few years, a stadium issue that had been parked. You get the picture.

Roll on to where we are now. New owners in place, new management structure in place, a recruitment team in place, a top coach in place, a group of highly talented, albeit young, players in place, owners who are prepared to invest, owners looking to build for the future, owners who are committed to building or developing a new stadium to compete with the best, owners exploring new ideas and innovation, owners who have passion.

Are we there yet? Of course not. Do we miss Roman? Of course we do. Are we frustrated at not being higher up the Premier League table? Of course we are. Do we expect every signing to be a ‘World beater’ the minute they sign? Of course we do?

Do we need a reality check? That depends on each and every one of us. Do we believe in the project? Some will, some won’t. Do we support the club? Of course we do. Do we embrace change and new ideas? Some will, some won’t. Do we see the vision of the owners? Some will, some won’t.

Do we wake up thinking, hey, this is an exciting project, may take a while, but I believe in Mauricio Pochettino and I can see potential in certain players. Do I see us moving up the table? Can I see us grabbing an European place for next season? Can I see us in a shiny new stadium achieving the 100 points in a season? Again, some will, some won’t.

I’m a glass half full type, but it will be nice when it’s totally full. For now though, half is fine. Up the Chels and best wishes to all the Eds and fellow posters.
