After promising to reveal whether or not he would be renewing his expiring contract with SC Freiburg on “Monday or Tuesday” of this week, it very much looks to be the case that Christian Streich will be vacating his post at SC Freiburg. For years the longest serving of all top flight coaches in German football (until Franck Schmidt’s 1. FC Heidenheim were promoted this past year) the 58-year-old Streich appears set to submit his resignation after 14 plus years as the SCF’s head-coach.

Germany’s main sporting tabloid cites its own sources close to the club that “everything indicates Streich will not continue”. In an interview with Germany’s “11 Freunde Magazine” earlier this year, Streich admitted that he no longer felt as if he was the right man to lead the club he’s spent his entire professional coaching career at. Streich began working as a coach within the SCF system in 1995.

Streich has led the Breisgauer to the Europa League three times. He also helped the club achieve immediate promotion back to the top flight following a relegation at the end of the 2014/15 campaign. Streich’s best finish with his long-time club came last year, when the Schwarzwälder finished the 2022/23 campaign in firth place on 59 points.

“I can feel that I’m getting older,” Streich said in the October interview, “My strength is waning.I find myself thinking more and more often: What energy do the players still have? And when I realize that it’s no longer enough and I need someone younger to get to the players, I stop. [a different club] is no longer an option.”
