Stalemate as Mainz and St. Pauli labour to goalless draw

A point apiece at the Mewa Arena as Mainz and St. Pauli played out a stalemate in their final fixture before the winter break.

An unspectacular contest ended goalless, with both defences largely on top and clear-cut chances at a premium. Rare opportunities went begging at either end as the sides maintained their respective positions in the table heading into the hiatus.

Given the importance of the occasion for two teams desperate for three points, a cagey opening was perhaps inevitable. St. Pauli shaded the early exchanges, earning a succession of corners and pinning Mainz back in their own third, though the early pressure failed to yield anything tangible as Urs Fischer’s side gradually battled their way into the contest.

Mainz showed their first real attacking intent just before the half-hour mark when a dangerous cross evaded the entire St. Pauli back line and dropped invitingly at the feet of Paul Nebel inside the six-yard box. However, the midfielder was unable to make meaningful contact, allowing the visitors to scramble clear.

The best chance of the half fell to St. Pauli captain Jackson Irvine in the 37th minute. A deep free-kick was headed into the Australian’s path, but his effort lacked power and was comfortably gathered by Daniel Batz. With chances few and far between, the sides went into the break level.

The cautious tone carried over into the second half, with both teams trading half-chances but struggling to seize control. Mainz went closest through Dominik Kohr, whose header from a corner drifted high over the bar, before Silvan Widmer failed to show sufficient conviction at the back post, volleying high and wide after a deep cross found him unmarked just before the 70-minute mark.

Despite attacking changes from both benches, the respective defences continued to snuff out any danger. Mainz enjoyed more of the ball and pushed forward in the closing stages but remained blunt in the final third, with the referee eventually bringing an end to proceedings at 0-0, a result that does little to ease either side’s concerns.

There are clear signs of improvement for Mainz, who are proving increasingly difficult to beat under Urs Fischer, yet victories continue to elude them as they head into the winter break bottom of the table and without a win in 11 matches. For St. Pauli, it marks a third consecutive game unbeaten as they sit 16th, ahead of Heidenheim’s clash with Bayern.
