Union Berlin failed to further extend the gap between themselves and the relegation zone after a home defeat to Holstein Kiel. However, Steffen Baumgart seemed to not be frustrated by his team’s lackluster showing.

“We’re well aware of what is at stake. And, you could see that in the boys’ performance,” said the 53-year-old after the game. “It’s annoying to concede a goal from the opponent’s first attack and then have to play for 50 minutes. Overall, we weren’t the worst team on the night, but we were the ones who lost.

“And, once again, it’s against a direct competitor. Now we have to stay focused, and just get the points.”

Meanwhile, Kiel players celebrate their first-ever away win in Bundesliga. Excluding Premier League’s champions-elect Liverpool, the newly-promoted side is the only team in Europe’s top-five leagues to score in every game away from home, but they couldn’t manage to win any of the games until this point.

“We’ve been lacking luck a few times recently, but today it was on our side. We adapted well to the opponent’s style of play. Compliments to all the guys who were on the pitch. We really deserved this win.” said Timon Weiner after putting another good shift between the posts.

“I’m very happy that we managed to hold on to the win. This victory feels incredibly good. I’m pleased that we were able to give something back to the fans for the great effort they put in.” said Timo Becker, who was instrumental in the only goal of the game.
