The 30-year-old has retained his place in the SVW first team.

Talented shot-stopper Mio Backhaus will remain as Michael Zetterer’s understudy in the Werder Bremen goal for the time being.

As the Bundesliga club announced on Tuesday evening, Zetterer will begin the upcoming season as their first-choice goalkeeper.

Only last Saturday, August 9, Werder coach Horst Steffen announced that a decision on the goalkeeper position would be made soon.

“We used the last six weeks of pre-season training to gain a clear understanding of our goalkeepers in training sessions and test matches.

“[Zetterer] overall impressed with his abilities and thus had the edge. We are confident that he will be a solid support for our team in the challenges ahead,” Steffen explained.
