Barcelona are scouring the market for a January reinforcement at centre-back after turning down the chance to sign PSG youngster Lucas Beraldo in the summer, according to Spanish media.
The Blaugrana lost defensive stalwart Inigo Martinez in the previous window. Despite extending his contract following a spectacular campaign, the veteran opted to make use of a secret clause in his deal that allowed him to complete a free-transfer move to Al-Nassr.
Barcelona, who again struggled to register players, were initially happy that Martinez had departed, as it freed up salary cap space, but they have since come to regret his exit.
Mundo Deportivo reports that Barcelona are slightly worried about their centre-back situation, with none of Ronald Araujo, Andreas Christensen and Eric Garcia having managed to really establish themselves as the perfect partner for Pau Cubarsi.
The reigning Spanish champions are therefore combing the market for a potential January opportunity. Given their salary cap situation – LaLiga has slashed it by €112 million compared to last winter – they are looking for an affordable option.
Barcelona snubbed Beraldo
The same outlet also reports that Barcelona could have actually signed a highly-rated centre-back in the summer, as they were offered the services of PSG defender Lucas Beraldo.
The Brazilian youngster grew increasingly frustrated with his bit-part role under Luis Enrique as last season progressed, and reports emerged during the Club World Cup that he had handed in a transfer request.
However, Barcelona opted to reject the 21-year-old because he ‘didn’t excite’ sporting director Deco and head coach Hansi Flick. Financial considerations likely also played their part – perhaps more so than ‘excitement’ – as PSG wanted to make a profit on their €20 million investment.
Barcelona are hopeful that they can use Gavi’s long-term injury, which is expected to keep him out for up to five months, to register a new signing in January. They would ideally like to sign a left-footed centre-back to allow Cubarsi to move to the right.
