England’s first foreign manager Sven-Goran Eriksson has passed away at the age of 76-years-old. In January, Eriksson had announced to the world that he had “at best” a year to live after being diagnosed with cancer.
Eriksson will be remembered for guiding England to three quarter finals in major tournaments, but also for multiple successful spells in domestic club football. In particular, Eriksson excelled in Serie A, with the likes of Lazio and Sampdoria, but he had also enjoyed spells in the Premier League with Man City and Leicester City. Eriksson had been a coach of numerous countries during his career, other than England, also managing Mexico and the Ivory Coast, as well as his last job in football as the national team manager of the Philippines.
For many though, Eriksson would be remembered as the coach of the English national team that contained a golden generation of players, including David Beckham, Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard and Ashley Cole.
Eriksson achieved his dream of managing Liverpool in a friendly match in May 2024.
