Holstein Kiel started the game off on the back foot and had less possession but they managed an early shot via Finn Porath’s attempt was saved by Gregor Kobel.

During the 27th minute, Kiel’s Shuto Machino put Holstein Kiel 1-0 up thanks to a rifled shot into the top corner which beat Gregor Kobel.

Five minutes later, Holstein Kiel doubled their lead as Phil Harries bagged a header past Dortmund’s Kobel to put the underdogs 2-0 up.

Thanks to a mixture of fog and smoke from pyros within the stadium, four minutes was added onto the first half.

In added time, Kiel’s Alexander Bernhardsson made it three for the home side as Harries’ cross was met by the Swedish midfielder.

After another delay in restarting the second half due to fog and the pyro smoke, it was confirmed that Borussia Dortmund would bring on Waldemar Anton and Maximilian Beier to try and start a comeback.

Around the sixty-minute mark, Borussia Dortmund brought on Giovanni Reyna in a bid to get a goal back.

Ten minutes later, the American scored from just outside the box to give the away side some hope.

During the 77th minute, Jamie Gittens pulled another goal back to make it 3-2 from the corner of the box with a vicious strike.

Just under ten minutes after this, Kiel captain Lewis Holtby saw a red card as he viciously challenged Felix Nmecha which meant Holstein Kiel had to hold on for the three points.

In the 88th minute, Nico Schlotterbeck’s header from close range was saved by Holstein Kiel’s Timon Weiner.

To seal the game, ten-men Kiel scored a breakaway goal via substitute striker Fiete Arp as Gregor Kobel was caught outside of his goal as he went up for the final corner of the game.

This goal marked a historic victory for Holstein Kiel, with it being their first against Borussia Dortmund ever.
