Germany number one Marc-André ter Stegen will undergo surgery to fix the back problem that has kept him out of recent matches.

The 31-year-old goalkeeper and his club, FC Barcelona, confirmed the news on Tuesday.

After intensive conversations with the medical team of the Club and various supporting experts, we decided to undergo a surgical procedure,” ter Stegen wrote on X.

“The break obviously annoys me. It is the right and safe decision in order to come back in the best conditions for my club.”

It’s unclear how long ter Stegen will be out for, but according to Sky Germany, he is targeting a return before Germany’s friendlies against France and the Netherlands in March.

The former Gladbach goalkeeper will look to retain his starting spot for his country ahead of Manuel Neuer, who recently returned from long-term injury.
