Enzo Maresca has continuously praised his Chelsea side in recent weeks, despite their innate struggles to create clear-cut opportunities.

The Blues were held to a 0-0 draw against Brentford on Sunday afternoon and their lack of potency in the final third is becoming a real issue for spectators, but it’s something that Maresca has ignored on multiple occasions.

Following a drab display against Thomas Frank’s side, Maresca told reporters: “Overall we played a good game. We prepared the game in the way it was, in terms of starting one way and finishing the other way.

“We played Thursday night, a demanding game, 24 hours less than them. Tricky stadium, sunny day, the pitch was dry, they tried to kill the tempo of the game.

“Overall we did enough to win the game. We shot more than 20 times. The only thing we missed was the goal, but overall I’m happy with the performance.”

Maresca added: “When you are not able to win, it’s important you don’t lose, you take the point and you move the table.

“At this stage of the season, 24 hours can make the difference in terms of rest and energy, which is the reason why I’m happy with the performance. They gave everything.”

However, Maresca appears to be oblivious to the biggest issue that is currently impacting his team – their lack of attacking threat.

Chelsea’s attack is a huge problem

Chelsea’s defence has been far from watertight this season, but they have only conceded two goals in their last seven games in all competitions. By comparison, the free-scoring side that hit their stride in October and November appears to have dissipated into thin air.

The Blues performed well against Tottenham Hotspur last week, granted, however they still only managed to score once against a shaky Spurs backline, and a late flurry of attacks saw Maresca’s side hanging on in stoppage time.

A clear indictment of Chelsea’s attacking woes can be seen by their top goalscorer standings for 2025.

Nicolas Jackson is nowhere to be seen – with 0 goals in seven appearances so far this calendar year – while Cole Palmer only has two strikes to his name.

In fact, Chelsea’s joint-top scorers in 2025 are surprise trio Tosin Adarabioyo, Marc Cucurella and Enzo Fernandez with a mere three goals apiece.

Chelsea’s top scorers in 2025

Player Goals
1. Tosin Adarabioyo 3
= Marc Cucurella 3
= Enzo Fernandez 3
4. Cole Palmer 2
= Pedro Neto 2
= Reece James 2
= Christopher Nkunku 2
= Noni Madueke 2
= Joao Felix 2
10. Levi Colwill 1
= Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall 1

Goals have been shared around the team, but Chelsea have been far from potent in front of goal and while Maresca believes they have been unlucky in a number of matches recently, their threat in the final third has dipped massively.

Chelsea are no longer a feared attacking unit and that simply must change before the end of the season if they are to secure Champions League qualification.
