Thiago Motta on Weah improvements and Juventus injuries: ‘Look at Man City’

Juventus coach Thiago Motta believes the many injuries suffered by Bianconeri defenders this season are ‘not bad luck’ but is happy with Timothy Weah: ‘I see him doing very well.’

The Bianconeri need points in the race for the top four in Serie A, especially after Wednesday’s Champions League elimination at the hands of PSV.

After Gleison Bremer and Juan Cabal’s knee injuries at the start of the season, more Juventus defenders had fitness issues, and currently, Renato Veiga and Pierre Kalulu are also unavailable due to muscle problems.

Motta previously said he didn’t believe in bad luck, so does he have an explanation for the growing number of injuries?

“If you look at today’s football, even other teams playing many matches have a lot of injuries,” he replied during a press conference on Saturday.

“Look at Manchester City. Defence is a crucial department, but many teams have this issue. Look at Real Madrid, look at City, it’s not bad luck.”

A lack of options at the back forced Motta to play USMNT international Weah as a right-back, and Motta is satisfied with the American’s contribution.

“I see him doing very well. The first duty of a full-back is to defend, be aggressive, and win duels, and he’s winning many of them,” said the Juventus boss.

“He’s aggressive; he can still improve, but I’m pleased with what I see. On top of that, he can also score goals.”

During the same press conference, Motta insisted he’s been “self-critical every day”, although the Bianconeri are “on the right path.”
