Thibaut Courtois has undergone successful surgery on a torn meniscus injury in his right knee, sustained during in a training session on Tuesday.
The Real Madrid star had been nearing a return to first team action, having missed the entirety of the campaign with an ACL injury to his left knee, picked up in August.
But the 31-year-old suffered a major setback which is expected to rule him out for two months, making it highly likely he will miss the remainder of the season.
On Wednesday, Madrid confirmed the procedure on the stopper had been successful and said Courtois will begin his recovery in the coming days.
According to The Athletic, the surgery was carried out by Dr Manuel Leyes, who previously operated on Courtois after his ACL injury, as well as teammates Eder Militao and Arda Guler.

The LaLiga leaders moved to sign out-of-favour Chelsea keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga on loan back in August but he has since lost his staring place to Ukrainian Andriy Lunin.
Courtois has made 230 appearances for the Spanish giants since joining from Chelsea in 2018 for what has turned out to be a bargain £35m fee.
The Belgian – who has also won 101 caps for his country – has been an integral player at the Bernabeu in recent seasons, winning eight trophies, including two LaLiga titles and one Champions League.
Madrid are confident of adding to their recent haul, having made light work of their domestic challengers. They currently sit eight points clear of rivals Barcelona with nine games left to play.
