Jurgen Klopp was left amused when his press conference was interrupted by a journalist’s phone flashing up with a call from their dentist.

The Liverpool manager was listening to a question on his team’s Premier League title battles with rivals Manchester City when the incoming call distracted him.

The reporter had left his phone next to Klopp in order to record his comments ahead of Sunday’s crunch visit to Arsenal.

‘The dentist is calling, that might be important,’ said Klopp while holding the phone up and showing his own pearly white teeth.

The embarrassed journalist swiftly apologised, saying ‘oh sorry, that is quite important.’

Outgoing Liverpool boss Klopp replied ‘the dentist! I can imagine’ before listening to the question for a second time.

Klopp, 56, announced last Friday he plans to leave Anfield at the end of the season after nine successful years in charge.

The German coach said he was ‘running out of energy’ and could no longer ‘do the same job again and again and again and again’ as he approaches a decade in charge.

Since Klopp’s message, Liverpool have beaten Norwich City 5-2 to reach the fifth round of the FA Cup and thrashed Chelsea 4-1 to stay five points clear of City at the top of the Premier League.

Klopp went to the dentist himself a few years back to have his own teeth fixed.

He visited the Dental Excellent UK clinic run by Dr Robbie Hughes, a dentist who has also treated former Liverpool players Roberto Firmino, Philippe Coutinho, Jordan Henderson and Sadio Mane.

Dr Hughes told Mail Sport in a 2021 interview: ‘Everyone noticed when Jurgen’s teeth started transitioning in press conference and it was brought up straight away. He spoke about it in interviews and it was great for me.

In an interview with Soccer AM, Klopp said: ‘I went to the dentist because I had some problems so really it was like you have to come in or it will get worse.

‘So I had to have antibiotics and medicine and then when we are halfway through they said: ‘You’re still going to struggle here and there’ and then I said: ‘could we do something knew like crowns or whatever’ and they said: ‘yeah of course we can’.

‘It was not as like I saw Bobby Firmino’s teeth and said: ‘I want them’. I like them though when I have them in, they feel comfortable.

‘Oh yeah Firmino has world class teeth but they are really, really, really white. It’s brilliant.

‘We never talk teeth together but we see each other everyday so every time I see him smiling now I’m going to think yeah, proper dentist.’
