Thomas Müller open to becoming a coach

Bayern Munich legend Thomas Müller has revealed he’s thinking about becoming a football coach once he hangs up his boots.

Last summer, Thomas Müller left Bayern Munich to join MLS side Vancouver Whitecaps on a contract running until the end of 2026.

Turning 37 later this year, Müller has started thinking about life after football – and a coaching career is one possibility.

When asked by Kicker whether he could see himself becoming a coach, Müller replied with a “yes.”

“I don’t know which training path I will take when I finally hang up my boots. That will also depend on how I feel after some time and distance,” he added.

When the timing is right, Müller wants to reflect on a few key questions for himself.

“Do I want to continue being part of this football world that has given me so many emotions? If yes, do I want to be on the pitch? That comes with little job stability, unless you become a youth coach.”

The veteran is in no rush to decide what will happen after his playing career, though.

“I haven’t found any orientation for myself yet, and I’m not trying to right now. I don’t feel that things need to happen quickly if I stay in football, so I don’t need to start preparing immediately. I can afford to take my time and see,” he said.

On the possibility of returning to Bayern in a different role, Müller said he wants to keep as many doors open as possible.

“I’m not the type to rule things out, and right now, I love being a player.”
