Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi is showing no signs of frustration after his transfer to Liverpool collapsed, according to England boss Thomas Tuchel.
The 25-year-old was at the heart of one of the biggest sagas of the summer window, with uncertainty reigning supreme even beyond Monday’s 7 pm deadline.
Guehi wanted to join Liverpool, and an agreement on personal terms was in place for weeks. Talks with Crystal Palace went down to the wire, but a €40 million deal was eventually struck, with Guehi completing his medical.
Before finalising this transfer, Palace needed a replacement and wanted to sign Brighton defender Igor Julio. However, this deal was hijacked by West Ham, ultimately dooming the entire operation.
Palace pulled the plug on Guehi’s move, with some reports suggesting that head coach Oliver Glasner had threatened to quit if his captain was sold without replacement.
Guehi ‘absolutely fine’ after failed Liverpool move
The relationship between Guehi and Glasner is now said to be tense, but according to England boss Thomas Tuchel, the centre-back is ‘absolutely fine’ despite recent events.
Guehi was all smiles when he arrived at the Three Lions camp earlier this week, and there are no signs of frustration that his transfer window ended in disappointment.
“Of course, we had a chat with him,” Tuchel revealed. He looks absolutely fine and impressive on the field. He has a good couple of weeks behind him on the performance side.
“He is the main driver of Crystal Palace’s success. He is the captain and the leader, and he played very impressively at the end of last season. He has continued like that in camp, and he handles it [his transfer situation] with respect and with and with brilliant attitude.”
