Three Atalanta players in Mario Pasalic, Berat Djimsiti and Honest Ahanor set individual Champions League records during their side’s 2-1 victory over Club Brugge on Tuesday night.
Ivan Juric’s side had to come from behind to secure a 2-1 victory over Club Brugge at the New Balance Arena: Laza Samardzic struck from the penalty spot with 15 minutes to go, before Pasalic’s eventual winner in the 87th minute.
The victory comes as revenge for Atalanta, given that they fell to a 5-2 aggregate defeat against the same opposition during the play-off round of last season’s Champions League, which cost them a spot in the Round of 16.
Which records did Atalanta break in the Champions League?
During Tuesday night’s match, three Atalanta players set new individual records.
Summer signing Honest Ahanor became the youngest ever Italian to start a Champions League match. An injury crisis at the back meant that the teenager played for the full 90 minutes in the back three alongside Djimsiti and Odilon Kossounou.
Ahanor was aged 17 years and 219 days on his first Champions League start.
Francesco Camarda remains the youngest Italian player to feature in the Champions League at 16 years and 226 days.
Pasalic and Djimsiti set club and national records
Pasalic’s late winner on Tuesday night means that he is now Atalanta’s highest ever goalscorer in the Champions League.
The Croatia international scored his eighth goal in the competition on Tuesday night, which was enough for him to surpass Duvan Zapata and Josip Ilicic in the club’s record books.
Defender Djimsiti has now appeared in more Champions League matches than any other player from Albania, with 30 appearances to his name.
