TNT Sports to lose Champions League rights as rival broadcaster makes major move

TNT Sports is reportedly set to lose the rights to the Champions League with American broadcaster Paramount+ set to take over the screening of the action in the UK

TNT Sports have reportedly lost the rights to Champions League action and will cease screening European football’s premier competition from 2027. The Times reports that the broadcaster will no longer show Champions League football in the United Kingdom with rival broadcaster Paramount+ ‘poised’ to take over.

TNT has shown the Champions League, Europa League and the Conference League since 2015/16, having won the rights in 2013 thanks to an £873million deal that saw them take over from Sky Sports. Paramount+ has heavily invested in films and entertainment since its inception, but has recently started expanding its catalogue with sports action.

US-based viewers can currently watch the Champions League via the platform, while it also recently secured a deal with the UFC to show the mixed martial arts organisation’s events. Paramount+ is also believed to have bid for the rights in other major European countries.

The bidding process for rights is being carried out by Relevent Football, and it is said to be a massively complex operation. It is also understood that bids for the rights of the UK, Germany, Italy, Spain and France are taking place in unison.

While TNT will lose the rights to Champions League coverage, they still hold them for Premier League matches and the FA Cup. As a result of the shake-up, it could mean that football fans will have to sign up for another subscription service if they want to watch Champions League football.

Meanwhile, Amazon Prime are set to land the first pick of Tuesday matches in major European competitions, thanks to a new streaming deal with UEFA.

The brand is currently in a three-year deal to exclusively broadcast 17 first-pick matches from the competition each season.

It comes as the Champions League is set to return following a two-week international break, which also put a halt to domestic football.

Tuesday’s round of fixtures will see Ajax face Benfica, Galatasaray take on Union Saint-Gilloise, Bodo/Glimt play host to Juventus and Napoli clash with Qarabag. Elsewhere, Newcastle United will make the trip to Marseille, Borussia Dortmund play host to Villarreal, Chelsea play Barcelona, Manchester City do battle with Bayer Leverkusen and Slavia Praha take on Athletic Club.
