Tottenham ‘make decision over Son Heung-min’s future’ – with the club captain’s deal set to expire at the end of the season

Tottenham will trigger Son Heung-min‘s one-year contract extension at the club that will keep him in place past the end of the season, according to reports.

Son’s existing deal is set to expire in May with Spurs keen to avoid risking one of their star player’s leaving for free with rival European clubs able to talk to him in January.

Extending the South Korean’s contract cancels out such a situation arising with Tottenham not requiring Son’s permission to add another 12 months to his existing deal, as reported by The Telegraph.

The extension will keep Son as part of Ange Postecoglou‘s team until the end of the 2025/26 season that will mark 11 years since he first joined from Bayer Leverkusen.

Spurs boss Postecoglou has been keen to keep hold of the 32-year-old forward who was made captain by the head coach at the start of his first season in charge of the club.

Son has earned himself legendary status at Tottenham, scoring 165 goals in the process and playing a pivotal role in helping the club qualify for the Champions League on several occasions.

He has so far scored three times in the Premier League this campaign and registered his third assist of the season in Tottenham’s shock 4-1 weekend hammering of Aston Villa.

However, despite Son’s stunning rise from a relatively unknown figure to a household name amongst English top-flight fans, he hasn’t been able to help the club end their trophy drought.

Speaking previously about his ambitions to bring silverware to the club, Son said: ‘I am fully focused on this year and just want to win something that everybody at the club – the players, all around – deserves,’ he said. ‘That’s what I’m working for.

‘In the future you never know what will happen, but I will give everything for this club because it’s been almost 10 years and I give everything.

‘I still have a contract with the club which is the very important thing and I just want to give everything until my contract [expires].’

Son will be hoping this could be the year that Spurs finally bring a trophy back to London with an upcoming Carabao Cup tie against Man United representing a great chance of reaching the final four at Wembley.
