Tragedy as MLS star’s wife dies after two-year battle with brain cancer

The MLS community is in mourning after St. Louis City SC star Eduard Lowen announced the tragic passing of his wife, Ilona, after a battle with cancer.

Ilona Lowen passed away on the morning of March 9, nearly two years after the couple first went public with the devastating diagnosis.

The news was confirmed by the club on Monday, sparking an outpouring of grief and support from soccer fans across the United States and his native Germany.

The statement read: ‘After a two-year battle with cancer, Ilona Lowen passed away this morning, March 9, 2026. 

‘We grieve alongside Edu and all those impacted by this loss and ask the CITY community to keep them in your prayers during this difficult time. Ilona was a beautiful example of love, humility, and kindness and will be deeply missed.’

The club also shared a message from the family’s pastor, Marc Sikma, which read: ‘Edu and Ilona built their life on faith in Christ, and we find comfort in knowing Ilona’s suffering is over and that she is now in the eternal presence of her Savior.’ 

Eduard, 29, had previously taken multiple leaves of absence from the team to care for his wife following the diagnosis in 2024.

Across the league, rival teams have sent their support, with the Seattle Sounders sending ‘love from Seattle to the Lowen family and the greater CITY community.’

The Columbus Crew added that they are ‘heartbroken for the Lowen family,’ while the Vancouver Whitecaps also shared their deepest condolences with the club.

Lowen’s footballing journey began in his native Germany, where he rose through the ranks at 1. FC Nurnberg. He made his professional breakthrough back in 2017.

He eventually helped the side secure promotion to the Bundesliga in 2018. 

He later earned a high-profile move to Hertha BSC in 2019. During his time in the top flight, he also spent a loan spell at Augsburg.

In June 2022, Lowen signed with St. Louis City SC as a Designated Player and quickly became the heartbeat of the team’s midfield.

Known for his set-piece ability, Lowen has recorded 17 goals and 15 assists during his MLS career.
