Trent Alexander-Arnold has avoided any serious injury after limping off in Saturday’s win over Bournemouth, Mail Sport understands.

The full back remains a doubt for Thursday’s Carabao Cup semi-final second leg against Tottenham – the Reds are 1-0 down from the first leg in north London – but he is unlikely to be sidelined for a significant period.

Alexander-Arnold, 26, went down in the second half holding his thigh and asked to be substituted.

Scans have shown that no serious damage has been caused and the injury will be a matter of days not weeks.

Arne Slot will now make a decision whether or not to risk his vice-captain in the Carabao Cup tie, with recent history suggesting he is not minded to rush back players who are not fully fit.

Conor Bradley is a capable deputy and put in a good shift at the Vitality Stadium.

Liverpool then travel to Plymouth on Sunday in the FA Cup fourth road. Alexander-Arnold and other first-team heavyweights such as Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah would be expected to be rested – from the start at least – for that match at Home Park.

It means that if Alexander-Arnold is not risked against Spurs, next Wednesday’s Merseyside Derby against Everton at Goodison Park would be a realistic return date.

Liverpool put on a belated Christmas bash for players on the way home from Bournemouth, with the squad dining in Mayfair restaurant Pirana.

The squad had Sunday and Monday off from training.
