Trent Alexander-Arnold, Real Madrid and Liverpool position on bombshell transfer

Trent Alexander-Arnold is Real Madrid’s No.1 summer transfer target as he can leave Liverpool on a free transfer, with his contract at Anfield set to expire on June 30th

Real Madrid are confident of landing Trent Alexander-Arnold as the Spanish giants try to finalise a deal for the Liverpool right-back. But the deal is not done yet as the Reds have yet to be informed and are still eager for the player to stay.

They may be facing a losing battle, though. Alexander-Arnold, 26, is out of contract at the end of the season and is free to speak to clubs outside of England. Talks have taken place with Real after the Spanish side failed in a bid to sign the player in January.

Real have been monitoring the situation for over 12 months, since the player’s contract entered the final 18 months. The England international has also held discussions with Liverpool since last year.

But Real are now pushing to finalise a deal to sign him on a free transfer this summer. The Reds face losing Alexander-Arnold with Virgil van Dijk and Mo Salah also out of contract at the end of the campaign.

Van Dijk and Salah have openly said they want to stay at Anfield but have yet to agree extensions.

Reds captain Van Dijk said earlier this month that he still has “no idea” if he will stay at the club while Salah has also cast doubt numerous times over his future.

Alexander-Arnold has kept his cards close to his chest and did not want his future to play out in public. But now it looks more likely than ever that his 20-year association with the club could be coming to an end.

Alexander-Arnold joined Liverpool’s academy aged six, having grown up near the club’s former training ground at Melwood.

The club vice-captain is set to win a second Premier League title this season having won the Champions League in 2019 while he has also won the FA Cup and two Carabao Cups.
