Troy Deeney baffled by ‘WEIRDEST’ thing he has ever seen in the Premier League during Bournemouth’s 3-1 win over Southampton

Troy Deeney admitted he was left dumbfounded by one of the strangest moments he has ever seen in a Premier League game, describing it as a ‘heads-gone’.

Deeney watched Bournemouth pick apart their south coast neighbours Southampton at St Mary’s to move up to fifth, continuing their European charge.

Goals from Dango Ouattara, Ryan Christie and Marcus Tavernier moved Andoni Iraola’s side within a single point of Manchester City in fourth. 

But it was Justin Kluivert who caught the pundit’s eye, despite him not scoring.

With the Cherries leading 2-0 at half-time and cruising to another victory, Deeney revealed how Kluivert handed his shirt to a Southampton supporter.

Bizarrely, the forward was even cheered for his actions despite the rivalry.

Deeney described the moment as one of the ‘weirdest’ he had ever seen in a game

Delivering his verdict on the match for talkSPORT yesterday, Deeney told host Adrian Durham: ‘[Bournemouth] haven’t even got to a point yet where it feels like they’re about to take the handbrake off.

‘They’re experimenting that for any little ball around the corner and a one-two, they’re in. And Southampton cannot keep up making these last-ditch tackles. I’ve counted five so far on my notes where it’s a last-ditch tackle. 

‘If they get that wrong either, they’re going through on goal, 1v1 Bournemouth. Otherwise, a player’s being sent off. And it just cannot happen the way that it is.

‘So to sum it up and put it all into a nice ribbon, we’ve just seen Kluivert, a Bournemouth player, go and give his shirt to a Southampton fan at half-time. And everyone was cheering. 

‘It’s one of the weirdest games of football I’ve ever been at in my life. I think that’s what you would call, Adrian, a heads-gone.’ 

Deeney also ripped into the home side’s display, adding: ‘They’re really bad, Adrian. They are really, really bad. I’m sat here. I’ve got my wife and my son who came today, as we spent Valentine’s Day down here yesterday. 

‘I just said to my five-year-old son, was that any good? And he said, “Southampton are trash, Dad”. That’s what he said to me. So, when you think about it, a five-year-old who’s not very up-to-date on football, he can’t see anything that they’re doing.

‘And I’m sitting here as an adult who’s been around and understands the game. I can’t see where they win. I think they will win a game, but I can’t tell you how they’re going to win that game or where the goals are going to come from.’

But Cherries boss Andoni Iraola insisted he is still taking it on a a game-by-game basis

Post-match, Cherries boss Iraola insisted he is refusing to get carried away.

‘I don’t care about the position right now,’ he said. ‘I continue with the same spirit. 43 points is a good amount but we need many more. We have to focus on the next games. Let’s see where we are and later in the season we can look at the standings.

‘We definitely deserve the results we are getting and this is not a given that you are going to perform the same way until the end. If we perform in the same way, we will be there and be close. But it is difficult to stay at this level until the end of the season.’
