Thomas Tuchel has admitted that Bayern Munich forward Thomas Muller “isn’t happy” with his limited role this season, but has insisted he remains a “special player.”

Muller, 34, has made 14 appearances so far this season, but he has only started four Bundesliga games and is yet to appear in a Champions League starting XI this term.

The Germany international has two goals and five assists in all competitions in 2023-24, despite his reduced game time, and he has been linked with a shock move to Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United in recent days.

Muller’s contract at Bayern Munich is due to expire next summer, and German outlet Bild have reported that he is unlikely to sign a new deal at the Allianz Arena.

Reports suggest that Ten Hag is a long-term admirer of Muller and reports from Germany, via Metro, say that he is being targeted by Man Utd ahead of the January transfer window.

Man Utd are targeting four new signings during the winter window, according to The Guardian, with a new centre-back, defensive midfielder, number eight and striker on their wish-list.

Muller doesn’t fit into any of those categories as an attacking midfielder, but Man Utd could take advantage of his situation at Bayern and swoop in a bid to sign the German legend for a cut-price fee.

Harry Kane’s arrival and the presence of Jamal Musiala means that while Muller is not surplus to requirements at Bayern, he is certainly more dispensable than in previous years. However, Tuchel has stressed that he remains a key member of the squad.

What has Tuchel said?

In an interview with the media, as per Fabrizio Romano, the former Chelsea manager and current Bayern head coach admitted: “Of course he’s not happy. But Thomas will always remain a special player”.

“He knows that he always has the chance to start. He knows my respect for him. Thomas is a legend for Bayern. I understand the discussion.”

Muller was an unused substitute during Bayern’s win over Koln this weekend, but has the chance to make an impact during their Champions League clash against Copenhagen on Wednesday.
