Inter earned an impressive 2-0 win away to Borussia Dortmund with a magical Federico Dimarco free kick and Andy Diouf goal, but it wasn’t enough for a top eight spot.

The Nerazzurri had won the opening four games, but then lost three on the bounce, so sat one point above the Germans going into this final match of the league phase. Denzel Dumfries, Hakan Calhanoglu and Nicolò Barella were injured, with Lautaro Martinez and Alessandro Bastoni initially rested, so Ange-Yoan Bonny partnered Marcus Thuram. Borussia Dortmund had Daniel Svensson suspended, Marcel Sabitzer and Niklas Sule sidelined, while Waldemar Anton was a late absentee after coming down from a virus.

See how it all unfolded on the Liveblog.

Serhou Guirassy was kept onside after a wayward shot was deflected into his path, but he slipped and scuffed the finish straight at Yann Sommer.

Inter also wasted on the counter with Yann Bisseck, who had a first attempt charged down and fired the second over after the Bonny back-heel flick.

A wayward Luis Henrique cross turned into an accidental shot to skim the crossbar, then Bonny failed to make the most of his cross with a weak header.

Francesco Pio Esposito came on and only grazed his head to the dangerous Luis Henrique cross. Moments later, Esposito sprung the offside trap from a Petar Sucic pass and his heavy first touch allowed Bensebaini to dive in with a desperate tackle.

Karim Adeyemi made an immediate impact off the bench, running into the box and forcing Yann Sommer to fingertip the ball of his feet.

Thuram’s header was too weak and Francesco Acerbi’s volley deflected for a corner, but Davide Frattesi really threatened when stinging Kobel’s gloves at the near post.

Inter found the breakthrough with a moment of immense skill, as Dimarco lifted the free kick over the wall and saw it dip into the near top corner from just outside the area.

Andy Diouf came off the bench and made sure of the victory in stoppages, as he twisted and turned, the finish taking a deflection off Jobe Bellingham to dribble into the bottom corner.
