Ruud van Nistelrooy has applied for the vacant Coventry City job, according to a report.

The Manchester United legend said his goodbyes to the Red Devils earlier on Friday. Van Nistelrooy, who only returned to the club in the summer as Erik ten Hag’s assistant, was axed by new head coach Ruben Amorim after a four-game interim spell.

During his time in charge, the eminently popular Dutchman won three games and instilled confidence and enthusiasm back into the Man Utd team. Before his departure on November 11, he announced his ambition to get back into full-time management.

According to United Stand reporter Sam C, the 48-year-old has now thrown his hat in the ring for the vacant Coventry City head coaching position.

The Sky Blues side shockingly sacked former Man Utd player Mark Robins earlier this month after he had led the club from League Two to the Championship playoff final and an FA Cup semifinal.

Van Nistelrooy joins Lampard on Coventry shortlist

The reporter claims that Van Nistelrooy has applied for the position. So far, however, nothing is advanced yet, with the club still collating a shortlist before making a final decision.

Van Nistelrooy was also recently linked with fellow Championship side Burnley where Scott Parker finds himself under increasing pressure. The Dutchman, of course, isn’t the only coach to have sent their application to Coventry.

Chelsea legend Frank Lampard, out of a job for over a year now, has done the same, as recently confirmed by Coventry owner Doug King. “We’ve received a huge amount of CVs from high-quality people, of which Frank is one,” he told Sky Sports earlier this week.

“We’ve done nothing on that process…but clearly we’re in the international break, we’ll be assessing everything. We’ll work out who’s going to make the shortlist and we’ll go from there.”
