Paolo Vanoli insists the 2-2 draw with Lazio ‘is the right result’ after a chaotic and controversial encounter. ‘Fiorentina react to negative events now.’

There were numerous controversial decisions at the Stadio Olimpico, as well as desperate David De Gea saves and goal-line clearances.

After Danilo Cataldi’s opener, the Viola fought back to turn it around with Robin Gosens and a soft Albert Gudmundsson penalty, only for Pedro to convert a last-gasp spot-kick for 2-2.

“When you are six minutes from the end and leading a game, of course there’s going to be disappointment, but considering the game overall, the result is the right one,” Fiorentina coach Vanoli told DAZN Italia.

“We started too sluggish in the first half and were having real problems on set plays, so our self-esteem got even worse. However, the team reacted to the opening goal and deservedly went in front.

“I can only applaud these lads, this gives us a sense of consistency and it is a great result to get a point in Rome. Now we must continue along this path.”

Fiorentina remain in the relegation zone, as Verona also earned a point today in a 2-2 draw away to Napoli, but it is significant progress.

“The team stays in the game now and is able to react to negative events, whereas before they let their heads drop,” noted Vanoli.

“We had a lot of avoidable mistakes, especially in the first half, but I am glad with the reaction to going behind. We are trying to change gear.”

There are reports that Nicolò Fagioli could be on the transfer market as a target for the likes of Lazio or Bologna in January.

“He’s doing very well and has taken the team in hand with a strong character. He’s a good playmaker and must have the ambition of being a key figure for Italy too,” concluded the Fiorentina coach.
