Hellas Verona director of sport Sean Sogliano reveals what went wrong with deadline day deals for Roma’s Tommaso Baldanzi and Romain Favre of Bournemouth.

The agreement had been made with Roma for the loan with option to buy for between €7m and €8m, as revealed by Football Italia transfer pundit Alfredo Pedullà.

However, it depended on the Giallorossi replacing him with a player who has different characteristics in attack.

When they failed to secure Jadon Sancho from Manchester United or Chelsea’s Tyrique George, the decision was made to keep hold of Baldanzi instead.

“Transfer deadline day is always a bit unusual, as everyone is sort of chasing each other around, and it’s a separate world,” Verona director of sport Sogliano told the Corriere dello Sport.

“We had sealed some deals earlier, and Baldanzi would’ve been an extra player to raise the quality level of the squad. The player was convinced and happy to come.

“However, the night before the deadline, Roma changed their minds and decided not to release the player on loan.”

It was not the only major disappointment of the day for Verona, because Bournemouth player Faivre had undergone a medical and had the paperwork all drawn up when he decided against the move.

Sky Sport Italia suggested it was absolutely a last minute decision from the player, who simply changed his mind about coming to Serie A.

“I wanted to see if we could get a player with similar characteristics to Baldanzi. However, I only want players who want to come here and will sleep with the Verona jersey on,” insisted Sogliano.
