Vieira rejects Vardy despite Genoa agreement

Genoa head coach Patrick Vieira has vetoed the club’s move to sign Jamie Vardy, after reports in Italy claim the club had agreed a salary for the striker to be covered by sponsors.

According to reports from La Repubblica this morning, Vardy was very close to joining Genoa – after his contract with Leicester City expired at the end of June.

However, Vieira was not convinced and opted to overrule the decision.

Vardy was close to Genoa

The reports suggest that it was Genoa sporting director Flavio Ricciardella who attempted to strike a deal with the English striker – with sponsors reportedly due to cover his wage with the Serie A side.

Despite the agreement, Vieira vetoed the move – putting an end to a shock switch for the former Fleetwood Town man to Italy.

Instead, it would appear the forward, who was a part of Leicester’s Premier League winning side in 2015-16, is edging closer to Scottish club Rangers.
