Vincent Kompany tells Bayern stars ‘you’re not that good’ after record win

Bayern Munich defeated Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League to continue their impressive winning run but Vincent Kompany is keeping a level head after a dominant start to the season

Vincent Kompany has told his players they are ‘not that good’ and not to believe the hype after they continued their record-breaking start to the season. Bayern Munich have recorded 16 wins in a row in 2025/26 after defeating Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Former Liverpool star Luis Diaz scored twice before being sent off for a brutal challenge against the French champions, but Kompany’s 10 men were able to hold on for victory in the second period despite Joao Neves’ strike. The German giants firmly established themselves as favourites for the competition with a performance that showcased their attacking and defensive prowess.

Bayern top the Champions League group stage ahead of Arsenal and are flying high atop the Bundesliga with their perfect record as Kompany takes charge of his second season. The Belgian coach was happy with his side’s efforts but is adamant about keeping his team in check.

Kompany does not want his team to get carried away, but he also wants to prevent his side from being negatively impacted when things are not going well.

The former Manchester City defender said: “I always tell my players: ‘When there’s hype please don’t believe it, you’re not that good – and when you lose a game or you have a bad performance, don’t believe that you’re bad, you’re not that bad’ – that’s something I always keep with me.

“Now we’ve won 16. But from tomorrow it’s back to zero and we have to win the next game.”

Kompany was particularly impressed by Bayern’s dominant opening 45 minutes and was not surprised by how accomplished his team’s efforts were in defence when PSG piled on pressure.

“We obviously would’ve liked to have kept playing in the second half like we’d done in the first, but you get games where things change through situations like the red card. I also want us to enjoy it when we have to defend. We work on it a lot in training.

“That’s why it didn’t surprise me that we did it well. The first half was really pleasing. In the second half, we had to play differently. We know that the Champions League isn’t decided yet, but today was a really important three points for us.”

Opposition boss Luis Enrique only had praise for Bayern too, labelling them the best team in Europe. “At 11 against 11, Bayern were stronger, without a doubt,” he said.

“You play against the best team in Europe, with the best results, and they pressed us at a high level.”
