Rudi Völler believes Germany put in a “lifeless performance” in their disappointing 2-0 World Cup qualifying defeat to Slovakia on Thursday.

Germany’s director of professional football did not hold back in an interview with ARD after the loss.

“That was not only disappointing. That was a lifeless performance,” Völler said.

“If we don’t manage, like at the clubs, to go into every duel with 100 percent commitment – wanting to win every single one – then we’re in for a harsh reality check.”

He stressed that this mentality – the will to win every battle for the ball – has traditionally been “the secret of our German national team.”

Germany continue their World Cup qualifying campaign against Northern Ireland on Sunday.
