Wanner declined a call up to the Germany U21s over the recent international break. In the interview, the 18-year-old explained that he simply wished to “give my body some extra rest”.
Contrary to statements made some ten days ago by Germany U21 head-coach Antonio di Salvo, 18-year-old German-Austrian talent Paul Wanner claims he has not decided whether or not he wishes to represent either his mother or father’s country international. In an interview conducted with Germany’s Süddeutsche Zeitung published Thursday, the teenage attacking phenom noted that he still needed time to make a commitment.
“I can clearly state that my decision remains open,” Wanner told the newspaper, “I haven’t decided anything yet. Dad, mom, and myself [will discuss it]. One can’t go back and forth on this decision.”
“I want to play a full year in the Bundesliga to see how it goes,” Wanner continued, “but it might be the case that the decision comes sooner. I don’t have a definitive feeling for when the right time will be.”
