Wayne Rooney left his fellow BBC pundits in giggles after retelling a story about Micah Richards from the pair’s playing days.
The two former England internationals were part of the studio team for the FA Cup Final alongside Gary Lineker and during the pre-match conversations, were asked about their time together in Manchester as young Premier League footballers.
Rooney and Richards were big names for either side of Manchester, and the former England striker recalled seeing his former rival during one of their nights out.
However, this wasn’t from when the pair were frequenting one of Manchester’s popular nightclubs or bars, but it was chance meeting in a local Chinese takeaway.
A meeting that Rooney joked down to Richards celebrating a particular milestone, one that saw the four former footballers in hysterics in the studio.

Rooney revealed he remembers seeing Micah Richards out in a Chinese restaurant
It turns out Richards was out celebrating a particular milestone with his friends
Rooney said: ‘I remember seeing Micah at a Chinese restaurant and I was in there with my family, having a quiet meal.
‘Micah came in with about twenty of his guys and they were celebrating. So I was thinking, what are they celebrating? And it was because Micah had made his 50th Premier League appearance!
‘I was sat in the restaurant, saying, what is he doing?’
The story was met with a gaggle of laughter from all four men, acknowledging the fact that Richards was making a big deal of ‘just’ playing fifty Premier League games.
As the quartet broke into hysterics, former Manchester City defender attempted to save his blushes by saying: ‘It was the Premier League, it was a big thing, a big thing for me Wayne. Why did you have to say that?’

Rooney and Richards were key players during their era’s Manchester derbies, and regularly battled against each other.
Since retiring Richards has carved out a successful career as a pundit and has become one of the BBC’s most popular names, as well as partnering with Lineker and Shearer for the This is Football podcast.
He will be joined in the studio by Rooney on a more regular basis for the BBC’s Euro 2024 coverage, before the former striker returns to management, having agreed a deal to become Championship side Plymouth’s new manager next season.
