We are still in the title race, insists Rangers boss Danny Rohl after goalless draw at Easter Road

Rangers  boss Danny Rohl insists he won’t allow today’s goalless draw with Hibs to derail his side’s Premiership title bid.

The visitors were second best for long spells at Easter Road and fortunate to escape with a share of the spoils.

They fell to third in the table on goal difference behind Celtic – who beat Falkirk 2-0 later in the day – with Hearts six points clear at the summit after victory over Dundee United last night.

Rohl pleaded for some perspective, however, as he reflected on his team’s underwhelming performance in Edinburgh.

‘If you said to me 10 weeks ago, [that] we are on the 1st of February, in this position, I would have taken it,’ he said.

‘We have to be consistent. And this is the next job on Wednesday [against Kilmarnock] to take the next points.

Rangers boss Danny Rohl says he is ‘totally convinced’ that the title race will go to the wire

Andreas Skov Olsen failed to provide a spark in Rangers’ 0-0 draw with Hibs at Easter Road

Hibs boss David Gray said his team would have beaten Rangers had they been more clinical

‘I’m totally convinced that this race goes until the end – and we have to be there.

‘In general, I think I have a clear picture in my mind. I saw a group that was growing and growing together.

‘And what I will not do today after this draw is to make everything very dark.

‘I think this is also part of this race. It’s an exciting one. We are still in the race.

‘You always want to win games, but it was exactly the expected tough game today. The opponent with physical intensity, I think it was the game they expected. At the end, I take the point.’

Rohl has already brought in three new players this month, and didn’t rule out doing some more business before the transfer window shuts tomorrow night.

‘We will see what happens,’ he said. ‘If something happens, I’m happy. If not, I carry on with my group. They have done a good job so far.’

New signing Andreas Skov Olsen was unable to provide the spark required to cut through Hibs’ defence, and was withdrawn midway through the second half.

The Dane’s arrival was hailed as something of a coup, having earned big-money moves to Club Brugge and Wolfsburg in recent years, but he has struggled to make an impact in either of his two appearances for Rangers so far.

However, Rohl has no doubts that the supporters will soon see the best of him.

He said: ‘It’s step by step – I think this is part in general in January. When you take players, you have to bring them into it.

‘He was available today, but not in the Europa League (for last Thursday night’s defeat in Porto). It wasn’t helpful for him.

‘But I see he’s getting better and better. He will be physically ready more and more, and I’m very positive.’

Hibs boss David Gray felt his side deserved to win, but hailed the players for giving him the reaction he was looking for following successive losses to Dunfermline and Falkirk.

‘The players certainly reacted from the disappointment in the last couple of games,’ he said. ‘We’ve got a point out of that today, and I’m disappointed we’ve not got three.

‘Rather than back-to-back defeats, you can flip that on its head and say it’s one defeat in seven in the league.

‘It’s something to build on. Internally, you need to make sure you stay calm during the difficult times.

‘More importantly, you give the players the belief to go back out on the pitch and put it right.

‘I certainly got that today. The final bit that was missing was to be more clinical. If we’d done that, I think we’d have won the game.’

Minus Kieron Bowie for the first time following the striker’s big-money move to Hellas Verona, Gray handed debuts to new signings Kai Andrews, Dane Scarlett and Owen Elding, with Andrews catching the eye in midfield after replacing the injured Miguel Chaiwa early on.

Gray said: ‘I thought [he was] excellent in terms of coming in. It’s not easy in the first half, especially in a game of that intensity.

‘It took him maybe five to 10 minutes, 15 minutes to get up to speed. But he certainly grew into the game. I’m very impressed with him.

‘The most pleasing thing for me is we’ve brought a few players in over the last few days. To have them right in your squad and coming on and impacting the game is excellent.’
