Welcome to Wrexham hero Paul Mullin suffers new low as Wigan trigger his contract BREAK CLAUSE to send him back from his loan move early

Wrexham hero Paul Mullin has suffered the embarrassment of having his loan move with Wigan cut short by the club.

Mullin made headlines for the Welsh club as the star of the early season of hit docuseries ‘Welcome to Wrexham,’ starring for the side in both the National League and League Two.

The club earnt three promotions in a row under the ownership of Hollywood A-listers Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, working their way up from the fifth tier to the second in the shortest amount of time possible.

He scored 38 goals in the National League in the 2022-23 season, and followed that up with 24 in League Two the following year. The 31-year-old was unable to then replicate that form in League One, however, managing just three strikes last season.

That led to Wrexham making the call to send him out on loan in the summer, with Wigan winning the race to get him through the door. So far this term, however, the Welshman has scored just five goals in 26 games for the Latics.

Wrexham said in a statement on Monday: ‘Wrexham AFC can confirm Wigan Athletic have chosen to activate the break clause in Paul Mullin’s loan contract, and the striker will return from his spell with the Latics this month.’

They hinted at another exit, though, adding: ‘The Club will assess Mullin on his return and, having only represented one Club in all competitions this season, explore all possible options for the striker’s future.’

He was not involved past January at Wrexham last season after a reported disagreement with manager Phil Parkinson. The January signings of Sam Smith and Jay Rodriguez saw Mullin increasingly marginalised. His contract runs until the end of next season.

Mullin took to social media after the move was confirmed by Wrexham in the summer, and urged everyone at the club to continue their startling rise up the English football pyramid.

A caption over an image of a jersey commemorating his 100th goal for the Welsh club read: ‘All the very best to everyone at Wrexham this season keep the train rolling.’

Taking to Instagram to post a compilation of Mullin in action and scoring goals for Wrexham with his song ‘Super Paul Mullin’ playing over the background, meanwhile, Reynolds said: ‘I can’t imagine seeing Mulls on loan and in another kit.

‘We wouldn’t be where we are without his heart, skill and work ethic. We love you, @paulmullin12. SPM.’

Fans were quick to pay tribute to Mullin in the comments while the striker also replied with a love heart emoji to Reynolds.
