Mio Backhaus has signed a new contract with Werder Bremen.

Werder Bremen have secured a contract extension for promising goalkeeper Mio Backhaus.

The length of the German youth international’s new deal was not disclosed by the Bundesliga club.

Werder’s head of professional football, Peter Niemeyer, has high hopes for the 21-year-old.

“We’re delighted that Mio sees his future at Werder and has chosen to stay long-term, convinced by our vision moving forward,” Niemeyer said.

“Mio is a very talented goalkeeper, and we fully believe he can showcase his skills in the Bundesliga. We’re very pleased with his performances so far and confident in the quality of our goalkeeping squad as we approach the new season.”

Backhaus, currently second-choice behind Michael Zetterer and yet to make his senior debut for the club, commented:

“Werder laid out a clear development plan for me from the beginning, which impressed me and gave me confidence that I have the best conditions to grow here. The competition is tough, but that motivates me. I’m here to learn, prove myself, and ultimately repay the trust the club has placed in me.”
