Romano Schmid’s transfer fell through in summer but the Austrian has come to terms with staying at Werder Bremen in recent weeks.

“I feel very comfortable at Werder, but of course my mood wasn’t great when I had to have so many meetings and phone calls.

“It was also the first time since having children that I’ve said: Things were difficult at home during these three or four weeks,” he told BILD.

Bremen were keen to cash in on the talented 25-year-old midfielder before the season started, but no serious suitors emerged.

“Werder wouldn’t have stood in my way. There just wasn’t anything suitable, and that really affected me,” Schmid added.

However, the Austrian has largely gotten over the disappointment of failing to find a new club and is a key player for Horst Steffen’s team.

So far this Bundesliga season he has contributed two goals and two assists in ten appearances to date.
