RB Leipzig will not recall Timo Werner in January despite his struggles at Tottenham, according to German media.

The Spurs attacker’s stocks continue to plummet. Werner actually enjoyed a solid start to life in north London when he initially joined Tottenham on loan last January, prompting the club to extend his stay by a further season.

However, the new campaign has been anything but plain sailing for the German. Rarely utilised by Ange Postecoglou, Werner has had to make do with a squad player role, starting just twice in the Premier League so far this term.

Against West Ham at the weekend, the former Chelsea flop came on as a substitute for a 20-minute cameo in a comfortable 4-1 victory. But even during the rout of the Hammers, Werner managed to make negative headlines.

At one point, the winger failed to control a simple pass, with the ball eventually going out for a throw-in. As the camera panned to former Tottenham chairman Alan Sugar, he couldn’t help but shake his head and laugh at the German in a clip that subsequently went viral on social media.

Leipzig make Werner decision

Given his struggles this season, it seems perhaps a good idea for RB Leipzig to recall their erstwhile star forward, similar to what they did last year with full-back Angelino when he failed to get minutes at Galatasaray and was moved to Roma instead.

However, BILD now reports that this will not be happening. Werner will remain in north London until the summer and Spurs, of course, still have their purchase option of €12 million, which is valid until the spring.

In fact, there is a major incentive for Werner to get his act together. The report claims that German national team boss Julian Nagelsmann is regularly in contact with the 28-year-old and has told him that the door to a return is open if he manages to find form.

Werner has not featured for Germany in over a year, but some good performances in the Premier League could see him make a comeback. On current form, however, no call-up will be forthcoming anytime soon.
