Things might not look so rosy off the pitch for West Bromwich Albion but on it Carlos Corberan has built a team which is well capable of pushing for promotion back to the Premier League this season.
His side picked up a statement win over high-flying Ipswich Town here thanks to goals from Darnell Furlong and Grady Diangana at the start of each half, to hand the visitors only their second league defeat of the campaign.
Off-field problems with Albion’s bleak financial picture and desire among the fans for a change of ownership are not being reflected by the team who, after a mixed start, now find themselves fifth in the table following a run of four wins in five games.
‘The result was the consequence of the performance,’ said the West Brom boss. ‘This Championship demands an excellent level every time you are on the football pitch. I’m seeing the team play with a lot of resilience, personality and maturity and that’s key.’
Furlong headed his side in front with just five minutes gone, meeting Matt Phillips’ near-post corner to glance the ball across the goal and inside the far post.

For their second goal, Wallace was given the chance to break at speed on the counter before feeding Brandon Thomas-Asante to calmly play in forward partner Diangana, who slotted in via the post.
Phillips then spurned a golden chance to add a third moments after the game restarted. Wallace picked out the winger a couple of yards from goal but he got his sliding effort wrong and diverted the ball out for an Ipswich throw.
Championship top scorers Ipswich failed to manage a shot on target but boss Kieran McKenna said: ‘We’re going to lose games this season and it’s about moving on to the next one and the response.’
