Niclas Fullkrug has already been recruited by Julen Lopetegui’s side from Borussia Dortmund this summer, but the Hammers are seeking an additional No.9 to provide the type of backup that they lacked last season.

FootMercato reports that West Ham are “very interested” in the former Chelsea youth, who has been on the books of Roma since 2021.

There is no indication of what type of fee Roma are seeking for the 26-year-old, yet he has an Expected Transfer Value (ETV) of €15.2 million. The Serie A side signed him for €41m and will be seeking to recoup as much of that figure as possible.

Abraham only played 12 games for Roma in all competitions last season after suffering a serious knee injury, netting just a single goal in the process.

Physical problems are one reason why Abraham’s star has fallen. At one point during his career, he had an ETV of €63m but having lost form over the past couple of campaigns, his value has dropped to a quarter of that figure. In the 2022/23 season, he scored only seven Serie A goals.

Abraham a backup to Fullkrug

Data analytics experts SciSports suggest that Abraham would arrive at West Ham as a rotation player for Lepetegui but does have the capacity to become a first-team regular.

Fullkrug, however, has a higher SciSkill score, which is based on hundreds of in-game data points, suggesting that even if a deal for Abraham is brokered, the Germany international forward will remain first pick for the London side.

The early signs with Roma are that he will only be a bit-part player in the Eternal City this season, grabbing just a single minute in the Serie A opener against Cagliari last weekend in a scoreless draw.
