The 2024 January transfer window has only just ended, but attention has already turned to the summer window as clubs across the world start planning their business.
The presence of the European Championship promises to complicate matters further, although players who impress in Germany may earn themselves a big-money move.
Last summer, the Premier League flexed its financial muscle in a serious show of strength, with Declan Rice, Moises Caicedo, Kai Havertz, Rasmus Hojlund and Mason Mount all moving for substantial fees.
Furthermore, the emergence of the Saudi Pro League saw multiple stars of the European game jump ship upon being offered millions to move to the Middle East.
In total, over €7.6 billion was spent on transfers across world football during the 2023 summer window – a new record.
This year, several interesting transfer storylines are set to be played out, including Kylian Mbappe’s long drawn-out saga with Real Madrid.
The France international is due to become a free agent this summer when his contract at Paris Saint-Germain expires, and multiple reports suggest he will finally move to the Santiago Bernabeu as a result.
In addition, Victor Osimhen continues to be linked with a move to the Premier League and his future is set to be resolved this summer, with Chelsea and Arsenal both interested in signing him.
The Blues spent €467.8m on new signings during the 2023 summer transfer window and could well spend big yet again as Mauricio Pochettino searches for more reinforcements.
Just like Mbappe, Adrien Rabiot, Piotr Zielinski, Wilfred Ndidi and Anthony Martial are among the players set to become free agents this summer.
European sides can now start negotiating with players whose contracts expire this summer, however, Premier League clubs cannot approach other players from the same league until the final month of their deals.
