Will it get even worse for Ange?

Tonight, Man Utd and Tottenham go head to head in the Europa League final with so much on the line, with Ange Postecoglou‘s future still unclear, and Ruben Amorim still yet to make the desired impact at Old Trafford.

For two teams in 16th and 17th place in the Premier League, today’s final is a surprise for many due to both club’s form domestically. However, what the outcome will reveal is that whoever loses is likely to be under huge pressure to keep hold of their job for another season. 

In particular, Ange Postecoglou is believed to be on his way out of White Hart Lane at the end of the season, and there are already rumours that he has agreed an exit package with the Spurs board. Postecoglou famously told reporters this year that, “I always win a trophy in my second season”. How ironic might it be if Ange bring home Tottenham‘s first silverware in years and still end up without a job this summer?

Postecoglou had a fantastic spell in Japan with Yokohama Marinos and an even better period with Scottish giants Celtic, and following that the Australian boss was given the opportunity to lead Tottenham Hotspur. At times his football has shown flashes of brilliance but his lack of defensive mindset has cost Spurs dearly this season and the club find themselves languishing at the bottom of the league table.

Whatever will come, will likely be known after tonight’s crunch final. Ange knows that the club’s last silverware came in 2008. That was a League Cup victory, and the Europa League would be a huge upgrade on that. It is a chance for Tottenham also to return to the Champions League next season. There is so much at stake today. Not only Ange’s job, but whoever his potential successor will be, has the opportunity to lead Spurs in the Champions League next season.
