Wirtz ignored Kimmich’s advice ahead of free-kick goal

Germany star Florian Wirtz admits he ignored advice from captain Joshua Kimmich before his stunning free-kick against Northern Ireland.

Florian Wirtz sealed Germany’s 3-1 win over Northern Ireland on Sunday with a stunning direct free-kick.

Just before the kick, Joshua Kimmich was seen giving advice to the Liverpool star, but Wirtz admitted he didn’t really take it in.

Asked what Kimmich told him, Wirtz said after the game:

“Honestly, I don’t know. There were too many suggestions, too many ideas from the side. I just knew I wanted to try it because the position was good.”

The goal could give Wirtz a confidence boost as he returns to England in search of his first goal for his new club, Liverpool.

“It might take a few more games. It’s a different league, a different style of football,” Wirtz reflected on his first weeks in England.

“I knew that and I’m glad to be here. When will I score my first goal? I don’t know, hopefully in the next game. It will come eventually.”
